About Wagmo Pet Insurance

Wagmo is a tech-focused pet wellness company founded with new pet parents in mind. They offer both insurance and wellness plans that empower pet parents to get the care they need for their pets when they need it most. Wagmo plans alleviate the financial stress of routine and emergency pet care for everything from grooming to emergency vet visits. The company was founded in 2017 by Christie Horvath and Ali Foxworth and is headquartered in New York.

There are a few key factors to consider before choosing Wagmo as your pet insurance provider; let’s start with the pros and cons:

Wagmo Pet Insurance Pros

  • Comprehensive coverage for cats and dogs via an Insurance Plan and Wellness Plan
  • Unlike other companies, Wagmo’s Wellness Plans may be purchased separately from their Insurance Plans
  • High reimbursement rates of 90 percent or 100 percent mean more cash back on covered expenses
  • Fast, easy reimbursements via Venmo, PayPal or bank transfer
  • 5 percent multi-pet discount, great for those with two or more pets
  • Additional 15 percent discount at renewal if no claims were filed in the previous year

Wagmo Pet Insurance Cons

  • Wagmo’s reimbursement limit is fixed at $20,000 per year—while this is a great rate, they don’t offer the flexibility of customization as some other companies do
  • Dental surgeries, behavioral therapies and prescription foods are not covered

Wagmo Pet Insurance Plans, Coverage & Pricing

Wagmo offers two types of coverage for your furry friends: Insurance Plans and Wellness Plans. Unlike other pet insurance providers, Wagmo allows customers to purchase either plan type together or separately (most other companies only offer wellness plans as an add-on to their insurance policies). We’ll cover both, starting with the Insurance Plan.

Wagmo Pet Insurance Coverage & Restrictions

Wagmo’s Insurance Plan is designed to protect your pet from accidents, injury and illness. Here’s a breakdown of what is covered under Wagmo’s Insurance Plan:

  • Prescription medications
  • Emergency vet visits
  • Virtual, in-home or in-office care
  • Hospital stays
  • Surgeries
  • X-rays, ultrasounds and CT Scans
  • Lab tests
  • Cancer treatment
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions
  • Prosthetics and orthopedics
  • Hip dysplasia
  • End-of-life care
  • Pet ambulance transport fees

Like all other pet insurance companies, Wagmo has some exclusions as well. Here are the things that are not covered under the Wagmo Insurance Plan:

  • Spaying and neutering
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Prescription food
  • Boarding
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Dental surgeries
  • Biohazard fees
  • Training and obedience
  • Cosmetic and elective procedures like tail docking or declawing
  • Breeding, pregnancy and birthing expenses
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Preventative care

Wagmo is upfront about their per-incident limit ($10,000 per incident) and lifetime limit ($100,000 per pet), too, so there are no surprises after you’ve already signed up for coverage.

Wagmo Pet Wellness Coverage

Unlike pet insurance, Wagmo’s Wellness Plan reimburses you for the routine care that you’re likely already doing to keep your pet healthy, like vaccines, vet visits and flea and tick prevention. This plan is offered in three tiers, which we’ll outline below:

Value

Wagmo’s base-level Wellness Plan is $20 per month* and covers the following:

  • $350 annual reimbursement limit
  • One routine exam per year
  • Two vaccines per year
  • One routine blood test per year
  • One fecal test per year

We did the math, and this plan option will save you $110 per year on these preventative treatments.

Classic

One step up in coverage, the Classic Wellness Plan is $36 per month* and offers:

  • $650 annual reimbursement limit
  • One routine exam per year
  • Three vaccines per year
  • One routine blood test per year
  • One fecal test per year
  • One urinalysis per year
  • $100 toward flea, tick and heartworm prevention
  • $100 toward grooming

Crunching the numbers, this plan option will save you $218 per year on these preventative treatments.

Deluxe

With the most robust coverage, Wagmo’s top-tier option is $59 per month* and covers:

  • $1,100 annual reimbursement limit
  • Two routine exams per year
  • Four vaccines per year
  • One routine blood test per year
  • One fecal test per year
  • One urinalysis per year
  • $200 toward flea, tick and heartworm prevention
  • $200 toward grooming
  • $100 toward dental care

And for the numbers: This plan option will save you a whopping $392 per year on preventative treatments for your pet (that you’re likely already paying out of pocket, but not getting reimbursed for!).

Wagmo Pet Insurance Cost

The cost of Wagmo Pet Insurance is based on your pet’s breed, age and the cost of care in your zip code. Wagmo dog insurance starts at $13 per month, and cat insurance starts at $9 per month.* As with all companies, the younger your pet is, the less it costs to insure them. If you’re looking for the lowest monthly costs, you’ll want to explore Wagmo’s high-deductible plan options.

Wagmo is set up like many other pet insurance companies with flexible options for deductible amounts and reimbursement rates. Their reimbursement rate options are higher than most companies, at 90 percent or 100 percent (versus 70 percent to 90 percent with other providers), and Wagmo has managed to offer these options, which give you more cash back on covered expenses, at a reasonable monthly rate. Let’s explore this in more detail:

  • Annual reimbursement limit:
    • The maximum dollar amount you can be paid back per policy year
    • Fixed at $20,000 per year*
    • While most companies offer options to choose from in this category, Wagmo offers a generous fixed reimbursement, which, based on their research, should cover most pet’s needs while creating a more affordable plan option
  • Annual deductible amount:
    • The fixed dollar amount you’re responsible for paying before your insurance kicks in
    • Choose from: $250, $500 or $1,000*
    • The lower your deductible, the more you’ll pay per month
  • Reimbursement percentage:
    • The percentage of each covered vet bill you’ll be paid back after you meet your deductible
    • Choose from: 90 percent or 100 percent*
    • The higher your reimbursement rate, the more you’ll pay per month

Getting a price quote with Wagmo is quick and easy. We used their online tool to generate a quote for a three-year-old, mixed-breed male dog living in Atlanta. Here’s how their monthly premium prices change based on the coverage options you choose:*

  • For a plan with Wagmo’s fixed $20,000 annual reimbursement limit, $1,000 annual deductible and 90 percent reimbursement rate, the monthly premium would be $28.07.
  • For a plan with Wagmo’s fixed $20,000 annual reimbursement limit, $250 annual deductible and 100 percent reimbursement rate, the monthly premium would be $52.90.

Like other pet insurance providers, Wagmo’s plans are less expensive for cats. Here are our sample quotes for a three-year-old, mixed-breed male cat living in Atlanta*:

  • For a plan with Wagmo’s fixed $20,000 annual reimbursement limit, $1,000 annual deductible and 90 percent reimbursement rate, the monthly premium would be $18.72.
  • For a plan with Wagmo’s fixed $20,000 annual reimbursement limit, $250 annual deductible and 100 percent reimbursement rate, the monthly premium would be $34.38.

Differences Between Wagmo Dog Insurance vs Cat Insurance

Unlike some pet insurance companies, Wagmo’s coverage doesn’t change between cats and dogs. Cat owners will enjoy the same generous reimbursement percentage options, $20,000 annual reimbursement limit, flexible deductible options and per-incident and lifetime limits as dogs do.

They do recognize that cats typically don’t need as much medical attention as dogs, however, and have adjusted their monthly premiums to align with that. According to Wagmo, their cat insurance plans start at $9 per month, while their dog insurance plans start at $13 per month.*

Wagmo Discounts

Wagmo offers a few different discounts that can help you save on your premium. At the time of this review, for example, they are offering a multi-pet discount for households with more than one pet and a 15 percent discount on renewals if no claims were filed during the previous year.

Wagmo vs Other Top Pet Insurance Companies

Now that we’ve taken a closer look at what Wagmo has to offer, let’s compare them to two other top companies: Banfield and Pumpkin.

Wagmo vs Banfield

Unlike Wagmo, Banfield does not offer pet insurance, only preventative wellness plans. At $36 to $60 per month, Banfield’s wellness plans are more expensive than Wagmo’s, although they do provide slightly more coverage to justify the extra money, especially with their top-tier Special Care plan, which includes unlimited office visits and an annual dental cleaning, eye pressure test, electrocardiogram and preventative X-rays.

For those looking for accident, injury or illness coverage, Wagmo is the way to go.

Wagmo vs Pumpkin

Pumpkin is another popular choice for pet insurance, with a digital-focused business model similar to Wagmo. However, there are a few ways the two companies differ that are worth considering when choosing the best pet insurance option for your furry friend:

  • Pumpkin offers a generous 90 percent reimbursement rate, but Wagmo goes a step further with a choice of 90 percent or 100 percent reimbursement for covered expenses.*
  • Pumpkin’s wellness plan can only be purchased as an add-on to their insurance plans, whereas pet owners can opt to purchase Wagmo’s Wellness Plan on its own.
  • Pumpkin offers $10,000 to unlimited annual reimbursement limits; Wagmo caps out at a fixed $20,000 limit.*
  • Pumpkin covers some things that Wagmo doesn’t, like behavioral therapies and prescription food, but it comes at a cost: $45 to $105 per month versus Wagmo’s price of $28 to $53 per month for a similar quote.*

*These amounts reflect the options at the time of this review and are subject to change.

Our Verdict

There are a lot of pet insurance companies out there, all vying for your business. That’s why we like to focus on what sets a company apart from the pack. For Wagmo, this is their high reimbursement rates, with up to 100 percent cashback on covered expenses and affordable coverage starting at $9 per month for cats and $13 per month for dogs.*

We also love that Wagmo’s Wellness Plans can be purchased as a standalone rather than an add-on to an insurance plan, offering pet parents reimbursements for the things they’re already doing to keep their pet healthy, like routine exams, vaccines and flea and tick prevention.

To top it off, Wagmo is up front and transparent about the way they do business, with straightforward messaging on their website, clear lists of what’s covered and what’s not, and a sample policy that you can look through before signing up for a plan.
