Freshology Meal Plan Options

Freshology offers four distinct meal plans, each featuring a robust selection of dietitian-designed, chef-crafted breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Balance

Their “Bread and Butter” plan, Balance dishes out the largest selection of delicious, calorie-controlled and nutritionally balanced meals, making it a great choice for those looking to lose weight or simply eat better. All of the meals are heart-healthy, which means they’re controlled for sodium, carbs, fat and cholesterol. And lest you confuse healthy with bland: Balance was rated #1 for taste by cooking brand epicurious. Balance, like all the meal plans, is fully customizable—if a customer doesn’t like the prescribed menu for the week, he or she can select substitution meals at no additional cost.

Balance-Diabetes

Like Balance, this plan includes a delicious variety of calorie-controlled, nutritionally balanced and heart healthy meals sure to please every palate. The difference between the two plans is that Balance-Diabetes closely adheres to the American Diabetes Association’s recommendations for carbohydrates—on average, carbs account for 45-50 percent of the total calories, and the individual meals contain no more than 45 grams each. If a customer needs to cut carbs even further, Freshology’s knowledgeable support staff is happy to help customize a plan.

Keto-Carb30

Designed to help you lose weight quickly and effectively, this plan makes cutting carbs easy. The menu includes a wide variety of low carb, keto-friendly meals that emphasize fats and proteins like meats, cheeses and eggs. Keto-Carb30 delivers just 30 net carbs per day, making it a great option for those who want to live a keto lifestyle but don’t want to have to count carbs all day, everyday. Unlike many other low carb and keto meal plans, Keto-Carb30 includes lots of vegetables, a critical component of any healthy diet.

Vegetarian

This plan is a meat-free version of the top-rated Balance menu. On the menu you’ll find calorie-controlled, nutritionally balanced and heart healthy vegetarian meals featuring restaurant-quality flavors and dietitian-approved portions. These meals do include dairy, eggs, beans and soy, so if you are vegan or have allergies, this meal plan may not be a fit.

Regardless of the plan you select, you can choose to have five or seven days’ worth of food sent to your door, and can pick between a two meal per day option (just lunch and dinner) or a three meal a day option (breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Freshology Menu

Freshology offers a five week rotating menu that typically includes five different breakfasts, lunches and dinners per week. If you don’t like one (or all) of the meals on your prescribed menu, you can easily swap in one of their other options—customizations are unlimited and free of charge. Plus, they keep all customizations on file so once you make them, you won’t have to do it again.

Customers appreciate that Freshology provides all side dishes, fruits and veggies, condiments and sauces for their meals. They also really like the food—one common sentiment is that it’s well seasoned, a good size—especially for “diet food,” and the flavors of the side dishes complement those of the main dishes very well. They also applaud the free and unlimited customization options.

One thing that some customers don’t love is how often chicken and lean turkey make an appearance on the menu, but these are staples in a healthy diet. Plus, Freshology does a great job of ensuring that each meal has its own unique flavor and appeal. 

If you’re an organic purist, you should know that while Freshology does use some organic ingredients, theirs is not an organic-only menu. 

Allergens and Special Diets

Freshology accommodates vegetarians, those with diabetes, low carb dieters and even some pickier eaters. For instance, if you don’t like seafood, you can request they remove it entirely from your menu. They also offer customers the option to substitute any meal on their weekly menu with another.

That said, Freshology doesn’t offer kosher, vegan or gluten-free meal plans at this time. And while some individual meals may work for these diets, they are transparent in stating that they can’t certify which meals adhere to specific dietary guidelines. They also cannot offer guidance or support to customers looking for guidance on how to adhere to these specialty diets. So it’s up to customers to determine if they can eat the meals.

Freshology Serving Sizes

When you place your Freshology order, you’ll choose between two meals per day or three (if you opt for two, they’ll omit breakfasts). You’ll also decide if you’d like to receive five days’ worth of food or seven.

One thing that sets Freshology apart from other meal delivery services is that their meals are perfectly portioned to help you reach your weight loss and healthy eating goals. They feature the right ratio of nutrients in sizes that make sense.

Meal Delivery Options

Freshology offers home delivery everywhere in the contiguous United States via local and national carriers. Because of customs regulations and their strict freshness policies, they are unable to deliver to Hawaii, Alaska or Canada.

Freshology is actually operated by Diet-to-Go, so there are a lot of similarities. In fact, other than the name and branding, we couldn’t identify one difference between them. Both offer prepared meals that are calorie-controlled and portion-conscious, and both are geared toward consumers looking to lose weight or simply eat better. The meal plans, menus, shipping options and pricing structure are pretty much identical as well. 

Freshology vs BistroMD

Like Freshology, BistroMD is a meal delivery service intended to help consumers lose weight without all the work. In addition to their Signature plan, which is similar to Freshology’s Balance plan, and their Diabetic plan, which is similar to Freshology’s Balance-Diabetic plan, BistroMD offers Gluten-Free, Heart Healthy and Menopause plans. Unlike Freshology, they do not offer a Keto or Vegetarian plan outright, although customization is an option for those who’d like to piece together a menu that aligns with their specific dietary preference.

Another difference between the two brands is the emphasis on snacks. BistroMD encourages customers to eat snacks between their meals—they provide nutritional guidance for those selecting their own snacks, and offer a formal snack package called EATS (Essential and Tasty Snacks) for an additional fee. Freshology does not offer a snack package and seems to regard snacks as more of a last resort for those not satisfied by their meals—they suggest that customers who find themselves hungry between meals eat one of the side dishes from their daily meals, or add in a fresh fruit or veggie, if necessary.

Yet another difference is that BistroMD’s seven-day program includes a “My Night,” which means instead of eating one of their prepared meals, you’ll create a dinner of your own with guidance they provide. The company says they account for this in their pricing, so you aren’t paying for a meal you aren’t getting.

One final difference is the support each brand provides. Whereas BistroMD provides weekly program emails and personalized support from Registered Dietitians, Freshology offers access to registered dietitians, health coaches and an entire community—they have a dedicated social media page on which members are very active, providing support and tips to one another.
